Abstract General Information
Title
TRANSLATION, CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION AND PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE SPANISH VERSION OF THE DYSFUNCTIONAL VOIDING SCORE SYMPTOMS QUESTIONNAIRE IN PEDIATRIC CHILEAN SAMPLE
Introduction and objective
Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score is a questionnaire widely used in research to assess Bladder Bowel Dysfunction symptoms, which has been translated into different languages, except for Spanish. The objective of this study was to translate and cultural adaptate the Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score into Spanish, and to evaluate its psychometric properties.
Method
The process of translation and cultural validation was approved by the author of the original questionnaire. This included forward-translation, back-translation, review by an expert panel, cognitive interviewing and pre-testing. Children diagnosed with Bladder Bowel Dysfunction and children without medical problems for the control group were recruited. To obtain evidence of validity and reliability we proceeded to evaluate the fit of different factorial models and calculated internal consistency coefficients. Also the diagnostic capacity of the Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score was evaluated through a logistic regression analysis and a receiver operating characteristic curve. This study was approved by the Scientific Ethics Committee of Health.
Results
The cross-cultural adaptation showed an adequate correspondence with the original version. A total sample of 248 participants (204 diagnosed with Bladder Bowel Dysfunction and 44 without medical problems) was recruited. The Spanish Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score was configured with 2 factors, Overactive Bladder symptoms (items 1, 2, 6 and 7) and symptoms of Difficulty Eliminating (items 3, 4, 8 y 9) showing excellent goodness-of-fit indices. The Overactive Bladder and Difficulty Eliminating factors were poorly correlated. The reliability of Overactive Bladder factor was Cronbach's alpha α = 0,68, McDonald's omega ω = 0,71 and Difficulty Eliminating factor was Cronbach's alpha α = 0,56, McDonald's omega ω = 0,57. A logistic regression analysis suggests a good diagnostic capacity of the Spanish Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score scale. Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic analysis showed a cut-off value of 3.5 score. The specificity was 0.907 and the sensitivity was 0.636.
Conclusion
The results of this study support the use of the Spanish Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score for assessing Bladder Bowel Dysfunction in Spanish-speaking children.
