BLADDER CANCER EPIDEMIOLOGY: A COMPARISON BETWEEN GERMANY AND BRAZIL

INTRODUCTION:Bladder Cancer (BC) is the ninth most common malignant neoplasm,representing an important public health problem around the world.
OBJECTIVE:To describe and compare the epidemiological characteristics of BC in Germany and Brazil.
METHODOLOGY:A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out using the GLOBOCAN 2020 database, in the period of March 2022, filtering by incidence and deaths of BC according to country, age group and sex of the year 2020.
RESULTS:The estimated number of new cases of Bladder Cancer in Germany in 2020 was 35,147. As for the number of deaths, 8,604 were estimated.Regarding the age of the patients, the age group with the highest incidence was that of those over 80 years old, 11,128(31,7%), followed by those between 70 and 79 years old, 10,461(29,8%),60-69,8,095(23%),50-59,4,389(12,5%),40-49, 914 (2,6%), 30-39,127(0,4%),and those aged 29 or under,33(0,1%).As for deaths by age group,we have:over 80 years old,4,369(50,8%),70-79, 2,687(31.2%), 60-69, 1,039 (12%), 50-59, 424 (5%),40-49,71(0,8%),30-39,13(0,1%) and those aged 29 years or under,1(0,01%).Regarding the incidence and deaths by sex, men totaled 25,942 (73,8%) and 6,019(70%),respectively. Brazil recorded an incidence of 15,854 new estimated cases.As for the number of deaths, 5,630 were estimated.The age group with the highest incidence was that of those aged between 70 and 79 years old, 4,576 (28,8%), followed by 60-69, 4,408 (27,8%), of those over 80 years old,3,796( 24%), 50-59 years, 2,235(14,1%), 40-49, 496 (3,1%), 30-39, 235 (1,5%), and those aged 29 or under, 108 (0,7%). As for mortality, the age group most affected was that of those over 80 years old, with 2,183 (38,8%),followed by those aged between 70 and 79 years, 1,665(29,6%),60-69, 1,155(20,5%),50-59, 469(8,3%), 40-49, 117(2,1%), 30-39, 30(0,5%), and of those aged 29 or under,11(0,2%).As for the incidence and deaths by sex, males totaled 11,313(71,4%) and 3,906(69,4%),respectively.
CONCLUSION:The incidence and mortality of BC was 55% and 34,6% higher in Germany compared to Brazil. Nevertheless, the incidence/death ratio was higher in Brazil.The number of new cases represented 0.04% of the German population and 0.007% of the Brazilian population. The age group most affected in Germany was those over 80 years old and, in Brazil, the highest incidence occurred among those aged 70 to 79 years,but mortality was higher in those over 80 years old.In both countries, males had both a higher incidence and deaths.
