Título

PROSTATE CANCER TRENDS IN THE BRAZILIAN PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM AFTER THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

Introdução e Objetivo

Considering the lack of data on the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the management of prostate cancer in the Brazilian population, the present manuscript provides an analysis of the numbers of diagnoses and treatments using information collected from the Sistema Único de Saúde do Brasil.

Método

All diagnostic and treatment data associated with prostate cancer (ICD-10 C61) entered in the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) between 2008 and 2022 were analyzed in the population at risk (age over 50 years).

Resultados

After the pandemic period, there was a 47% decrease in the number of prostate cancer diagnoses and a 70% drop in the number of treatments offered for prostate cancer compared to the pre-pandemic year (2019), as observed in Table 1. Compared to 2013, it is possible to observe that the numbers for 2022 were lower, as shown in Figure 1. The peak of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment by SUS occurred in 2019 when it diagnosed 41,980 patients in the at-risk population and provided treatment for 31,567 patients already diagnosed.

Conclusão

The diagnosis of prostate cancer in Brazil shows a growing decline, in line with the decrease in treatment for this disease. Although all regions of Brazil demonstrated this post-pandemic effect, the North region suffered the greatest decline in the number of diagnoses and the Northeast region presented the greatest decline in treatment. It was observed that the numbers obtained in the year 2022 were lower than the numbers from 2013, in both categories.
