UPDATED ERECTILE FUNCTION OF LOW-INTENSITY SHOCKWAVE THERAPY FOR PENILE REHABILITATION AFTER RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY - LATE RESULTS

Introdução e Objetivo

Still there is very little evidence in the literature to support the use of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LiESWT) in the management of erectile dysfunction (ED) after radical prostatectomy (RP), a major issue among those patients. The aim of this study is to assess the long-term results of LiWEST as a penile rehabilitation in patients who underwent RP.

Método

This is an assessment of the long-term outcomes of our previous randomized clinical trial. The study is a randomized clinical trial registered in ReBEC (ensaiosclinicos.gov.br) Trial: RBR-85HGCG. Where the patients were divided into two groups with 2 parallel arms and an allocation ratio of 1:1. The control group received tadalafil 5 mg/day, while the experimental group was submitted to tadalafil 5 mg/day plus 2,400 shocks/session-week on penis across 8 weeks of treatment. Both groups started penile rehabilitation after the removal of the transurethral catheter. To measure the sexual function the IIEF-5 score was used in those patients.

Resultados

Among the 77 patients included in the previous analysis, 35 patients were assessed after a median follow-up of 45 months (42-50 months; IC95%), 17 and 18 in the experimental and control group, respectively. The final mean IIEF-5 score between the experimental and control groups was similar (15.2 ± 2.09 x 14.1 ± 1.97, respectively; P=0.58).

Conclusão

The LiESWT showed no impact on sexual function rehabilitation in patients submitted to RP after a long-term evaluation.
